College Bound Legal was created to help families prepare for one often overlooked part of sending a student to college, legal protection after a student becomes a legal adult.
After graduating from the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, Sammi Desmon saw how quickly a student’s independence can affect a parent’s ability to help in an emergency. The realization came when a friend’s family purchased legal forms they believed would protect them, including a Medical Power of Attorney, Financial Power of Attorney, HIPAA Release, and FERPA Release. But when an urgent situation arose, the parents could not access the information they needed.
Sammi brought the documents to her mom, Beth, an attorney with decades of contracts experience. Beth immediately saw the issue. The forms were not state approved or tailored to the state’s laws. That meant that even though the family had taken action, they were not fully prepared.
That discovery inspired College Bound Legal. Sammi created the company to make essential college legal forms simple and accessible, while Beth oversaw the documents designed to give families greater confidence before move-in day.
